With hunting season just around the corner, Lincoln Civic Center is preparing a weekend event to keep hunters in touch with newest trends and provide entertainment for the whole family.

On Friday, Sept. 12, from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 13, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., the Lincoln County Wildlife Expo will take place at the Lincoln Civic Center. From a children’s area to a 3-D archery competition, there will be something for all ages.

“We do focus on the kids and the family as a whole,” said Civic Center General Manager Quinn Jordan. “We by far have the best year on tap as we’ve had in a long time.”

The weekend’s agenda includes a 5K walk and run to honor those who perished or were directly affected by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Cost will be $10 for all military and first responders and $25 for all others.

For those whose favorite outdoor activity is cooking, the Expo will include a cook-off sponsored by Farm Bureau. The four categories will be chicken, ribs, pork butts and brisket, along with a $500 grand prize for the overall winner.

Over 50 booths will be present, including vendors such as the Bass Pro Shop and Natchez Sports Center. Plus there will be live demonstrations with animals ranging from snakes to alligators.

Entrance into the Expo will be $6 for adults and $5 for children aged 7 to 12. Children 6 and under get in free. All paying attendees will be entered to win a free gun. The winner must be 18 years or older and pass a background check to receive and pick up any free gun. Gold Nuggett is sponsoring the gun giveaway.

Sullivan Ford is also sponsoring a silent auction, with proceeds going to take someone who is physically disabled on the hunt of a lifetime. This year, Callie Cole, of Bogue Chitto, has been chosen for the hunt.

“We try to make sure we first select someone from the area,” Jordan said. “If the general public has a nomination for next year, contact us.”

This is the sixth year of the Wildlife Expo, which is the main fundraiser for the Civic Center, and proceeds are invested into the facility.

“I’d like to say a special thank you to our sponsors, especially our premier sponsors: Bank of Brookhaven, Toyota of Brookhaven and Farm Bureau of Lincoln County Federation,” Jordan said.

“Without their support, events like this would not be able to take place.”
