WESSON – Wide receiver Donald Gray and defensive tackle Demond Tucker were two of the standouts for the No. 3 Copiah-Lincoln Wolfpack in their season opening 37-13 win over the No. 19 Itawamba Indians. Their efforts have been further recognized as Gray has been named MACJC Offensive Player of the Week and Tucker has been named MACJC Defensive Player of the Week.
Gray, making his first career start after missing the 2013 season with an injury, finished with seven catches, three touchdowns, and 183-yards receiving. The Memphis native averaged 26.1 yards per catch. In the second quarter Gray beat the Indian defense on a go-route and hauled in a 35-yard touchdown pass by his fingertips. Later in the quarter Gray would hook up again with Co-Lin quarterback Daniel Fitzwater. This time Gray would catch the ball in stride for a 40-yard gain. He would then juke three defenders on his way to a 65-yard touchdown reception. In the fourth quarter Gray capped his night with a 4-yard touchdown reception from Fitzwater.
Tucker, the reigning NJCAA Defensive Player of the Year, finished with nine tackles (four solo, five assist) against Itawamba. Tucker had 1.5 sacks for a seven yard loss and one tackle for a loss that netted five yards lost. Tucker, a product of Hazlehurst High, forced one fumble with a monster hit in the second quarter. On that play, Itawamba quarterback D’Andre Belton scrambled for a first down before running into a quickly closing Tucker. The ball was knocked loose and recovered by Co-Lin defensive end Ryan Duckworth. Belton would not return to the game after being helped off the field.
Gray, Tucker, and the No. 3 Wolfpack return to action on Thursday when they travel to No. 1 East Mississippi in Scooba for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Listen live at www.colinathletics.com.
