Bassfield beats Hornets

The two-time defending 2A state champions Bassfield Yellowjackets relied on their speed to overpower the Loyd Star Hornets and claim a 66-18 victory Friday night in Region 7-2A football action.
The Hornets scored three touchdowns against Bassfield’s defense, Parker Flowers threw a touchdown pass to his big brother Peyton Flowers. Brett Calcote scored on a rushing touchdown, and Peyton Flowers also punched in a rushing touchdown.
Senior running back Brett Calcote was the offensive leader for the Hornets with 104 yards rushing on nine carries. Peyton Flowers contributed 10 rushes for 96 yards.
Parker Flowers completed six of 14 passes for 91 yards. Calcote caught two passes for 28 yards Peyton Flowers caught a pass for 30 yards.
Defensively, Peyton Flowers directed Loyd Star’s charge with 16 tackles and had a fumble recovery. Calcote provided seven stops. Parker Flowers helped with five tackles.
On special teams, Willie Smith led with 60 return yards. Zac Arnold had 26 return yards.
Loyd Star returns home to host their Lincoln County/region rivals, the West Lincoln Bears, next Friday for homecoming as both teams fight a battle for the last playoff spot in the region 7-2A race. Bassfield visits East Marion. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
