Lady Wolves win season opener, men fall

GOODMAN – The Co-Lin Wolves captured a split decision over the Holmes Bulldogs Monday night in their 2014-2015 season debut in JUCO basketball.

The Lady Wolves (1-0) overcame a sluggish first half to win their opener 75-69 on the road against Holmes. In the men’s game, the Holmes Bulldogs overpowered the Wolves to claim a 82-59 victory.

Co-Lin returns to action Thursday as they prepare to host the Mississippi Delta Trojans for their home opener. The women tip off at 6 p.m. with the men’s game to follow.

The Co-Lin Lady Wolves came out strong in the second half to outscored the Lady Bulldogs 45-36 after trailing Holmes 33-30 at halftime.

Two members of the Lady Wolves scored in double figures to lead team in their season opening victory. Tyra Gibson powered the Lady Wolves with 18 points. Alexis Collins contributed 10 points. Jamilah Sanders scored nine points. Claresa Banks and Toni Woods provided eight points apiece.

The Bulldogs had three players to reach double figures as Aja Williams led the charge with 20 points. Carmesha Nails netted 12 points, and Tayanna Purnell had 11 points.

Holmes outrebounded Co-Lin 39-35. LaShinda Wilson led the Lady Bulldogs with eight rebounds. Gibson was the top rebounder for Co-Lin with five rebounds.

The Holmes Bulldogs came out of the gate on fire as they took control of the contest early and rolled to a 38-23 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Wolves fought hard to rally back, but the Bulldogs managed to win the second half scoring 44-36 to secure the win.

Donte Watson and Dearius Griffin were the top shooters for Co-Lin with 11 points apiece. Watson powered the Wolves on the boards with nine rebounds.

Daryl Macon sparked the Bulldogs with a game-high 29 points. Marcus Washington contributed 12 points, and D’Angelo Richardson scored 10 points. Cedric Harper led on the boards with seven rebounds.
