Wesson sweeps West Lincoln in season opener

WESSON – The Wesson Cobras opened their 2014-2015 varsity season Friday night by hosting the West Lincoln Bears.

The Lady Cobras came from behind to take the win in the final period of the game with a final score of 43-37.

In boys’ action, the Cobras outplayed the Bears in a blowout win with a final score of 71-45.

After the game, Wesson Coach Rusty Newman commented on the win by saying, “I’m proud of my girls and boys. They executed well and got the wins.”

The Cobras travel to Bogue Chitto to face the Bobcats Monday night at 6 p.m. for the girls, and the boys play at 7:30.

West Lincoln will travel to Meadville on Tuesday to face the Franklin County Bulldogs. Girls begin play at 6 p.m. and boys at 7:30 p.m.

Wesson 43, West Lincoln 37 

The Lady Cobras upset the Lady Bears with a 43-37 win Friday night. Junior Jashia Smith led the Lady Cobras with a total of 17 points which included one three-pointer. Smith was also the top defensive player with a total of 12 rebounds.

Junior Carnesha Green was also another top defensive player with seven rebounds and one steal. Senior Kayla Britt averaged 11 points and had four steals and one assist. Sophomore Aurianna Vaughn had nine points, four steals and three rebounds. The Lady Cobras were 15/30 in free throw action.

West Lincoln junior, Hanna Moak, topped the Lady Bears list with a point total of 18 with one three-pointer. Moak was also top defender with eight rebounds but fouled out in the last period of the game. Junior Alli Mullins put six points on the scoreboard and averaged seven rebounds and one steal. The Lady Bears were 10/21 in free throw action.

Wesson Coach Rusty Newman reflected on the win saying, “It was an ugly game but we were fortunate to come out on top. I’m proud of the girls for fighting the whole game and getting the win.”

Wesson 71, West Lincoln 45 

The Wesson Cobras rolled over the West Lincoln Bears to secure a big 71-45 win.

Anthony Jones, Cobra junior, led the night with 25 points which included two three-point shots, six assists and five rebounds. Sophomore Tyler Robinson was the top rebounder with nine rebounds and a point total of 17. Sophomore Eric Rhymes was also a top defender with eight rebounds, six steals and 11 points on the scoreboard. The Cobras were 6/14 in free throws.

Bears top scorer was junior Ronnie Edwards with a point total of 15, which included three three-point shots. Edwards was also the Bears top rebounder with six rebounds and two steals. Junior Keshaun London scored 12 points with two rebounds and five steals. The Bears had an average of 5/7 in free throw action.

Wesson Coach Rusty Newman stated, “The guys came out with a lot of energy and exhibited a great team effort. I’m proud of the guys for this big win to start the season.”
