Loyd Star sweeps St. Aloysius

VICKSBURG – The Loyd Star Hornets and Lady Hornets swept the St. Aloysius Flashes Tuesday night in high school and junior high basketball action.

In the girls contest, the Lady Hornets (3-1) thumped the Lady Flashes 61-27.

In boys action, the Hornets (4-0) crushed the Flashes 75-29.

Loyd Star returns to action Friday as they prepare to host the Bogue Chitto Bobcats for four games. Junior high action begins at 4 p.m., followed by the varsity contest at 6 and 7:30 p.m.

Loyd Star 61, St. Al 27 

The Lady Hornets came out strong and quickly set the tone of the contest early as they cruised to a 28-12 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Loyd Star continued to overpowered the Lady Flashes as they hammered St. Aloysius 33-15 in the final frames of action.

Jordan Shelby powered the Lady Hornets with a game-high double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Marcey Givens scored 10 points and had eight rebounds. Hannah Dickerson contributed eight points and grabbed five rebounds. Megan Givens and Faith Bergeron provided seven points apiece.

“The girls did a great job shooting and rebounding the ball,” said Loyd Star coach Gene “Moochie” Britt. “I believe this was the best game we have played this season offensively and defensively. Overall, I was very pleased with my girls efforts.”

Loyd Star 75, St. Aloysius 29 

The boys contest was similar to the girls contest, as the Hornets blasted the Flashes 37-4 in the first quarter to cruise to a 53-15 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Hornet turned off the floodgates, but still managed to control the contest over St. Aloysius with a 9-6 run in the third quarter and a 13-8 run in the fourth quarter.

Senior guard Caleb Yarborough sparked the Hornets with 22 points. Zach Arnold contributed 14 points. Cade Hodges was the top rebounder for the Hornets with six rebounds. Edrick Alsworth and Javion Beard contributed six points apiece.

“The guys did a good job dominating the first quarter to set the tone and flow of the contest,” said Britt. “I was pleased very everyone effort and was glad to give everybody plenty of playing time.”

Charles Pendleton was the top scorer for the Flashes with 11 points. Luke Eukstain netted 10 points

In junior high action, Loyd Star captured two wins over St. Aloysius.

In the girls game, the Lady Hornets sting the Lady Flashes 31-13. Andrea Butler paced the Lady Hornets with 20 points. Sarah Britt and Megan Poole provided five points each.

In the boys contest, Loyd Star defeated St. Aloysius 47-21. Dane Smith led the Hornets with 20 points. Zabien Price contributed 13 points.
