Wesson prevails over West Lincoln

The Wesson Cobras traveled to West Lincoln Saturday afternoon for some basketball action against the Bears at Jack Case Gymnasium.

In the girls games, the Lady Cobras came from behind to take the win in the second half with a final score of 28-24.

In boy’s action, the Cobras played a close match with the Bears but got the win with a final score of 77-69.

The Cobras play at home Tuesday and host the Bogue Chitto Bobcats. The girls varsity contest starts at 6 p.m., followed by the boys at 7:30.

Wesson 28, West Lincoln 24 

Senior Kayla Britt led the Lady Cobras with a total of 8 points which included one 3 pointer. Britt also got 3 rebounds and 2 steals. Top defenders were Jashia Smith and Carnesha Green. Both got 7 rebounds each, 1 steal each and both had a point total of 4. Other top players for the Lady Cobras were Tashay Glasper and Alaysha Vaughn with 5 points each. The Lady Cobras were 10/19 in free throw action.

West Lincoln top players were Allie Rushing and Lillianne Rushing with 8 points each. Hanna Moak was defender with 9 rebounds, 2 steals and a point total of 6. The Lady Bears were 2/7 in free throw action.

Wesson Coach Rusty Newman reflected on the win saying, “It was a sloppy game. The girls did not execute well and were fortunate to get the win. A win is a win and we will take it.”

Wesson 77, West Lincoln 69 

The Wesson Cobras got another win over the West Lincoln Bears with a final score of 77-69 Saturday afternoon. The game was tied at the half when West Lincoln’s Ronnie Edwards shot a huge 3 pointer from down court with 2 seconds on the clock to jump ahead of the Cobras by 3.

Wesson came back after the half and pulled away with the win Anthony Jones, Cobra junior, led the night with 25 points which included two 3 point shots, 1 assist and 5 rebounds. Sophomore Eric Rhymes was another top player with 1 rebound, 2 steals and a point total of 19. Rhymes shot 4 three-pointers and was 100% from the free throw line (3/3). Dartavious Dixon was another Cobra that was 100% in free throws with an impressive average of 6/6. The Cobras were 19/23 in free throws.

Bears top scorer was KeShaun London with a point total of 27, which included three 3 point shots. London was also 4/4 in free throws. Zekenith Porter was the Bears top rebounder with 5 rebounds, 2 steals and a point total of 11. Ronnie Edwards was another top scorer with 19 points. The Bears had an average of 10/16 in free throw action.

Wesson Coach Rusty Newman stated, “The boys got in foul trouble early on which hurt us. We played sluggishly but picked up after the half and got the win.”
