Loyd Star splits with North Forrest

The Loyd Star Lady Hornets and the North Forrest Eagles were victorious in late Saturday night high basketball action at Loyd Star Gymnasium.

In the girls game, the Lady Hornets swarm all over the Lady Eagles to claim a 49-19 victory.

In boys action, the Eagles rallied from behind late in the final minute of the fourth quarter to steal away a 70-67 win over the Hornets.

Loyd Star resumes action today as they prepare to host the St. Aloysius Flashes for four games. Junior high action starts at 4 p.m. Varsity action is set to begin at 6 p.m.

Loyd Star 49, North Forrest 19 

The Lady Hornets (5-1) came out firing on all cylinders as they dominated the Lady Eagles in the first half with a 16-2 run in the first quarter and a 14-3 run in the second quarter to take a commanding 30-5 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Hornets cruised to secure the win but still managed to outscore the Lady Eagles 19-14 in the final two frames of action.

“The girls played really well offensively and defensively,” said Loyd Star coach Gene “Moochie” Britt. “Overall, I was pleased with their effort and I was glad to give everyone plenty of playing time.”

Senior guard Marcey pumped in a game-high 16 points to lead the Lady Hornets. McKenzie Smith chipped in with 11 points.

Alexis Habbard was the leader in scoring for the Lady Eagles with eight points. Ashley Henderson added four points.

North Forrest 70, Loyd Star 67 

In the boys contest, the Hornets and Eagles basketball fans watched a thrilling contest as both Loyd Star and North Forrest team came out swinging. The Hornets (5-1) manage to claim the early lead in the first quarter with a 17-12 run.

The Eagles soared back in the second quarter with a 19-14 run to the game at halftime at 31-all.

In the second half, the battle continued to heat up among the two schools as the Hornets went on a 21-14 run to claim a 52-45 lead after three quarters of action.

In the final quarter, the Eagles rallied back to outscore Loyd Star 25-15 to secured the win.

“The guys played a good game all the way until the very end,” said Britt. “We just missed some key shots and free throws at the end that would probably give us the win. North Forrest has a very good team, but overall I was pleased with my guys effort.”

All five Loyd Star starters reached double figures as Levi Redd lead the charge with 16 points. Javion Beard contributed 15 points. Edrick Alsworth and Caleb Yarborough chipped in with 13 points apiece. Brad Jasper added 10 points.

Jamaine McWilliams powered the Eagles with a game-high 23 points. Trayquan Shelton provided 14 points.
