Loyd Star sweeps St. Aloysius

The Loyd Star Hornets and Lady Hornets swept the St. Aloysius Flashes in high school and junior high basketball action Tuesday night at Loyd Star Gymnasium.
In the girls game, the Lady Hornets swarmed all over the Lady Flashes to claim a 64-31 win.
In the boys contest, the Hornets clobbered the St. Aloysius Flashes 81-41.
Loyd Star continues action Thursday as they prepare to participate in the Lincoln County Tournament at Bogue Chitto. The Hornets and Lady Hornets will face the West Lincoln Bears in the tournament opener. The girls will tip off at 4 p.m., followed by the boys action at 5:30 p.m.
Loyd Star 64, St. Aloysius 31
The Lady Hornets came out and quickly took care of business in the opening quarter with a 20-0 run and continued their scoring onslaught in the second quarter to command a 43-3 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Lady Flashes managed to outscore Loyd Star 28-21 in the final two frames, could not overcome the Lady Hornets large lead.
“The girls came out and played really well in the first quarter,” said Loyd Star coach Gene “Moochie” Britt. “I was very pleased with their effort and glad to give everyone plenty of playing time.”
McKenzie Smith powered the Lady Hornets with a game-high 12 points and was also the leader on the boards with seven rebounds. Marcey Givens netted 11 points.
Loyd Star 81, St. Aloysius 41
The boys contest was similar to the girls game as the Hornets overwhelmed the Flashes with a 22-5 run in the first quartet and continued the same pace in the second frame to take a 40-16 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Loyd Star continued add to their lead in the third period with a 25-15 run and a 17-10 run in the final quarter.
“The Boys played really well in the first half,” said Britt. “I was very pleased with our overall team work and hustle.”
Levi Redd paced the Hornets with a game-high 17 points and five rebounds. Edrick Alsworth contributed 16 points. Caleb Yarborough had a double-double performance with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Brad Jasper had nine points and seven rebounds.
Luke Eckstein led the Flashes with 11 points. Conner Smith chipped in with 10 points.
In junior high action, Loyd Star captured two win over St. Aloysius.
In the girls contest, the Lady Hornets defeated the Lady Flashes 32-24. Andrea Butler paced the Lady Hornet with eight points. Jonn Norman and Megan Poole provided six points each.
In boys action, the Hornets knocked off the Flashes 34-30. Zabien Price powered the Hornets with 15 points. Brent Cade chipped in with 13 points.
James Trichell lead the Flashes with 12 points. Braxton Chewing had 11 points.
