MAGEE – Lawrence County swept a Tuesday-night double-header at Magee. In girls’ play, Vicki Rutland’s Lady Cougars won their third straight, outscoring Magee in the second half for a 54-46 win. In boys’ action, Pat Bridges’ Cougars led most of the way in a 52-32 victory.
The Lady Cougars and Lady Trojans were knotted at 15-15 at the half, with the second half seeing an offensive explosion from both teams. LCHS outscored Magee 39-31 after the intermission, with junior DeNeisha Dickson pouring in 21 of her season-high 27 points after the break.
Freshman Camryn Davis also had a huge night for the Lady Cougars, who improved to 6-5 with the win. Davis had 16 points and 11 rebounds. Zipporah Baylis handed out 13 assists for LCHS.
“We executed really well on our set plays,” Coach Rutland said, “and that’s been a bit of a problem for us at times. DeNeisha and Camryn had good games, and Zipporah passed the ball really well against their 1-3-1 zone.”
The Lady Cougars shot a sizzling 51 percent from the field. In an era when making roughing half of team’s free throws is the norm, both teams shot exceptionally well from the free throw line. Lawrence County hit nine of twelve free throws, while the Lady Trojans converted ten of eleven.
In the boys’ game, Lawrence County led 21-14 at the half, then blew the game open by outscoring the Trojans 19-5 in the third quarter. The Cougars substituted liberally for much of the game.
Phillip Moore led LCHS with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Keyshawn Feazell had a strong game with 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots. Keith Davis had 12 points and 9 rebounds. Gabriel Lewis nabbed 7 steals for the Cougars.
“We played a pretty solid game,” said Coach Bridges. “We executed fairly well on offense, and got good effort on defense. Keyshawn had one of his best games so far.”
Lawrence County will close out pre-Christmas at this Friday, hosting Crystal Springs.
