Funeral Services for Shirley Ann Bracey Thompson of Bogue Chitto are 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015, at New Zion Union M.B. Church with burial in New Zion-Norfield Cemetery. Williams Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation is Friday, Jan. 2, 2015, from 1 until 6 p.m. at Williams Mortuary and again at the church on Jan. 3, 2015, from noon until time of service.
Mrs. Thompson, 73, died Dec. 24, 2014, at her residence. She was born on Sept. 16, 1941, in Canton to Henry Bracey and Alline Eddington Bracey.
Mrs. Thompson has done many significant and worthwhile things to touch the lives of those she has been associated with. She had a love for cooking and being in charge. She was united in holy matrimony to Johnny Thompson.
She confessed Christ at an early age at Mt. Zion M.B. Church in Bogue Chitto. Her membership was later moved to New Zion Union M.B. Church. She served in the education ministry and the senior mission ministry.
She was a 1959 graduate and valedictorian of Lincoln County Training School in Bogue Chitto. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree, Master of Arts degree and educational specialist degree from Jackson State University.
Mrs. Thompson’s teaching career began in the Indianola School District and continued in the Hazlehurst School District. Other work experience was with the Career Development Center of Jackson Public School District and the Upward Bound Program of JSU. She was a Diamond Life Member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., member of the Love and Fellowship Prayer Band and volunteer for Stew Pot in Jackson where the last day of the year is Shirley Thompson Day. Her extensive travel has included Africa and Washington D.C. and witnessing the inauguration celebration of President Barak Obama.
Preceding her in death were her parents; spouse; and siblings, Edith Marie Allen, Henry Jr., James Earl and Robert Charles.
Survivors are her significant other, Billy Johnson of Hazlehurst; sisters, Bettie Sidney, Cora (Rev. Eugene) Edwards and Ivory Mae Bracey, all of Brookhaven; brothers, Harry Lee (Georgianna) Bracey and Larry Joe (Judy) Bracey, both of Bogue Chitto and Alfred Curtis Bracey of Brookhaven; special nephew, Allen DeMarcus Sidney of Hammond, Louisiana; two special nieces, Sherrolynn Edwards of Canton and Semona Bracey of Bogue Chitto; a special grand niece, Alandra Sidney of Brookhaven; a special friend, Mary Katherine (Leroy) Jenkins of Jackson; and a host of other relatives and friends.
