Loyd Star sweeps Wesson

The Loyd Star Hornets swept the Wesson Cobras in high school basketball action Tuesday night at Loyd Star Gymnasium.

The Hornets pulled out the win over the Cobras with a final score of 75-63. The Lady Cobras were defeated in a close game against the Lady Hornets with a final score of 48-37.

Wesson will travel to Jefferson County on Friday to face the Tigers.

The Hornets will host West Lincoln on Friday, Varsity girls begin play at 6:00 and varsity boy action starts at 7:30.

Loyd Star 48, Wesson 37 

The Lady Cobras fell to the Loyd Star Lady Hornets with a 37-48 loss. Lady Hornet junior Hannah Dickerson was the top scorer for Loyd Star (10-3) with a point total of 10 and 8 rebounds. Senior Marcey Givens scored three 3-pointers, which also made her a top scorer with 9 points and had three assists. Top defensive player for the Lady Hornets was junior Jordan Shelby with 10 rebounds, 2 steals and a point total of 6. The Lady Hornets were 1/8 in free throw action.

For the Lady Cobras, junior Jashia Smith led with a total of 13 points, 2 steals, and 8 rebounds. Other top Wesson players were senior Kayla Britt with 9 points, 2 steals, and 5 rebounds and sophomore Aurianna Vaughn with 7 points, 1 steal, and 3 rebounds. The Lady Cobras were 7/11 in free throw action.

Lady Hornets coach Gene Britt commented after the game, “The girls played really good team ball and everyone did a great job. We are getting better every game.”

Loyd Star 75, Wesson 63 

The Hornets (10-3) managed to get hot in the second and third quarter, scoring 27 points in each period to collect the win. The Hornets were busy at 3-point arc nailing nine 3-pointers against the Cobras.

Hornet senior Edrick Alsworth was the top scorer with 27 points, which included three 3-point shots and had 10 rebounds and 3 steals. Senior Caleb Yarborough was on defensively with 9 rebounds, 2 steals and a point total of 17. Levi Redd contributed 13 points, 5 steals, and 2 assists. The Hornets had an average of 12/19 in free throw action.

For the Cobras, sophomore Tyler Robinson was the top offensive player with a point total of 18 and had a good defense showing with 8 rebounds and 3 steals. Cobra junior Anthony Jones was another top player with 15 points, 9 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 assist. The Cobras were 3/8 in free throws.

Hornet coach Gene Britt reflected on the win by stating, “The boys played great ball from the 2nd quarter on and responded well after getting behind. The boys played hard nose basketball and shot well from the outside. I’m proud of their effort and the only thing we need to work on is our foul shots.”

In junior high action,  Loyd Star defeated Wesson twice in junior high basketball.

In the girls game, the Lady Hornets knocked off the Lady Cobras 32-17. Andrea Butler paced the Lady Hornets with 13 points. Sarah Britt had six points.

The Lady Cobras were lead by Arie Douglas with five points and Shelbi Maxwell scored four points.

In boys action, Loyd Star defeated Wesson 49-35. Dane Smith powered the Hornets with 20 points. Zabien Price contributed nine points and Jett Calcote had five points.

Stewart Dickerson directed the Cobras with nine points and Kenner Bizot added eight points.
