Loyd Star tames McComb Tigers

MCCOMB – The Loyd Star Hornets and Lady Hornets kicked off 2015 by sweeping the McComb Tigers in a pair of varsity soccer matches Tuesday night in McComb.

In the girls contest, the Lady Hornets manage to overcome a slow start and finished strong in the second half to beat the Lady Tigers 4-1.

Madison Brister paced the Lady Hornets by scoring two goals. Other goals were scored by Leslie Walker and by Mallory Holden with an assist from Madison Jones.

On defense, Shelby Richardson had 12 clearances followed by 5 from Amber Archer, 4 from Mikayla Warren and Starr Thomas each. Goalie, Polly Patterson had 3 saves.

In the boys’ game, the Hornets beat McComb 1-0 with their goal being made by Blayne Brister, Center Forward.

Loyd Star’s defense was led by Lane Rogers, sweeper, who had 15 clearances followed by Brett Calcote with 13, Dylan Smith with 9, Cameron Smith had 8, Mason Falvey with 6 and finally Anfernee Clair with 5. Goalie, Hayden Brownlee, made 15 saves to help shut McComb out.

The Hornets resume action tonight as host Natchez Cathedral. The Lady Hornets play at 4:30 and guys play at 6 p.m.
