Brookhaven dominates Pearl River Central

The Brookhaven Panthers and Lady Panthers were victorious Friday night in Region 6-5A basketball action as they dominated the Pearl River Central Blue Devils to claim two big wins at Sinclair Gymnasium.

In the girls’ contest, the Lady Panthers captured their first win of the season with a thrilling 45-27 victory over the Lady Blue Devils.

In the boys’ game, the Panthers tortured the Blue Devils with their defensive pressure to win 98-43 and extend their winning streak to six games.

Brookhaven resumes action Tuesday as they prepare to host the Warren Central Vikings for a pair of non-divisional games. The Lady Panthers will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the boys contest.

Brookhaven 45, PRC 27 

BHS coach Freda Craft’s Lady Panthers (1-17, 1-1) captured their first win of the season Friday night over the Pearl River Central Lady Blue Devils.

“We are very glad to get our first win of the season,” Craft said. “I am extremely proud of my girls. They have worked hard all season long to earn this victory. Hopefully, we can learn from this and continue the momentum.”

The Lady Panthers’ game summary was unavailable at press time, due to Coach Craft stating she left her scorebook at the gym. Please check the DAILY LEADER’s Tuesday edition for coverage.

Brookhaven 98, PRC 43 

The Panthers (16-2, 2-0) quickly overwhelm the Blue Devils in the first quarter to claim a 22-10 advantage and continued their offensive onslaught in the second quarter with a 22-6 run to take a commanding 44-16 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Ole Brook Panthers continued to roll as they tortured the Blue Devils with their defensive pressure and outscored Pearl River Central 54-27 in the final two frames of action.

“The guys played a good game,” BHS Coach Preston Wilson said. “I was glad to give everyone plenty of playing time. Overall, we are glad to get the win.”

The Panthers had six players to score in double figures as Alex Benson and Danarius Gray lead the charge with 12 points apiece. Shon Blackwell, Tyriq Reese and Tavis Moore contributed 11 points each. Lazorian McNulty chipped in with 10 points. Moore was the leader on the boards with nine rebounds. Darrian Wilson provided help with five rebounds and scored eight points. Randy Wilson added nine points and had three steals.
