The city is working on a draft of an agreement regarding the dog ordinance the county is seeking to enact.
During Jan. 6’s Board of Alderman meeting they approved the drafting of an agreement that will outline what the fee will be for housing vicious dogs taken into custody by the county as well as other handling issues regarding holding the dogs in the city.
Joe Fernald, the city attorney is working on the wording of the agreement.
“What we’re trying to do is cooperate and clarify,” Fernald said.
The county’s dog ordinance has been accepted by the Board of Supervisors and is now in the hands of the city. The county is looking to the city to serve as a housing unit for the vicious dogs the county picks up in their area. The agreement drafted by the city will cover questions and concerns those on the board have regarding the ordinance between the count and city.
The ordinance would provide guidelines under which a dog can be declared vicious and subsequently removed from the custody of their owner if certain precautions are not taken.
Fernald projects the city will be ready to present at the board’s next meeting.
