Texas Southern beats Jackson State

HOUSTON (AP) – Madarious Gibbs scored 19 points and Texas Southern built a big lead, held off a late charge and beat Jackson State 67-54 on Monday.
Texas Southern (8-10, 5-0 Southwestern) raced out to a 12-4 lead behind Deverell Biggs’ 3-pointer just over four minutes in. A 9-0 run midway through the half extended the lead to 21-8 and Texas Southern led 38-21 at the break.
The lead reached 20 with 15:19 left on a pair of Malcolm Riley free throws. Jackson State got it to 10 with 4:31 left on Jaleel Queary’s jumper, but Texas Southern reeled off the next 11 points to wrap up the win.
Biggs finished with 13 points and three 3-pointers for Texas Southern. Chris Thomas had 12 points and Riley added 10.
Jackson State (4-15, 2-4 Southwestern) was led by Kaven Bernard with 14 points while Derrell Taylor added 12 points and six boards.
