FLORA – The Brookhaven Academy Cougars and the Lady Cougars defeated the Tri-County Academy Rebels in a pair of varsity game Saturday afternoon.

In girls’ action, the Lady Cougars’ relied on a big fourth quarter to edge the Lady Rebels 45-44.

In the boys’ contest, the Cougars roared past the Rebels to claim a 50-41 victory.

Brookhaven Academy returns home to host the Central Hinds Cougars for six games in a big district 5-AA contest at John R. Gray Gymnasium. Junior high action starts at 3 p.m., followed by a pair of junior varsity and two varsity games. The Cougars will also be celebrating Senior Night for their basketball seniors.

BA 45, Tri-County 44 

The Lady Cougars struggled to get things going offensively in the first as they trailed the Lady Rebels 26-14 at halftime.

In the second half, BA managed to find their rhythm and battled back in the third quarter. However, they still trailed the Lady Rebels 41-28 heading into final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Cougars (9-17, 4-2) exploded with a 17-3 run to steal away the win.

Anna Kathryn Smith powered the Lady Cougars with 15 points. Mary Claire White contributed 12 points. Anna Michael Smith provided seven points.

Patty Hancock was the top scorer fort he Lady Rebels with 15 points. Tori Luke chipped in with nine points.

BA 50, Tri County 41 

The BA boys came out and quickly set the tone of the contest as they took of the first quarter to gain a 14-6 lead.

In the second quarter, both teams scored 11 points each as BA took a 25-17 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Rebels fought back and outscored the Cougars 12-10 to cut BA’s lead down 35-29 before going in the fourth quarter.

In the final period, the Cougars answered Tri County’s rally with a big 15-12 run to clichéd the win.

Senior forward Peyton Hood directed the Cougars offensive attack with 28 points and eight rebounds. Drake Flowers contributed 15 points.

Jake Jones led the Rebels with 12 points. Jacob Speckner added 10 points.
