Panthers take two from Wingfield

JACKSON – The Brookhaven Panthers and the Lady Panthers captured the big sweep over the Wingfield Falcons in Region 6-5A basketball action Friday night.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Panthers secured their second win of the season with a 52-38 win over the Lady Falcons

In boys’ action, the Panthers extended their winning streak to eight games after overcoming a slow start to prevail 64-56 over the Falcons.

Brookhaven returns to action Tuesday as they travel to Clinton to take on the Clinton Arrows in a three-game series. Junior varsity action is set to start at 5 p.m. followed by a pair of varsity games.

Brookhaven 52, Wingfield 38 

In the girls’ game, the Lady Panthers and the Lady Falcons battled in a close contest in the first quarter as Wingfield secured a 10-9 advantage.

In the second quarter, Brookhaven rallied back with a 16-9 run to take a 25-19 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Panthers (2-18, 2-1) outscored the Lady Falcons 27-19 in the final two quarters to secure the victory.

Senior forward Chantel Quarles powered the Lady Panthers offense with 12 points. Shoniece Smith and Yasmine Hill contributed 11 points apiece. Kynitria Hill provided eight points, and Asia Byrd scored six points.

Briana Thompson was the top scorer for the Lady Falcons with 12 points. Fantasia Hampton chipped in with 11 points.

Brookhaven 64, Wingfield 56 

The Brookhaven Panthers (18-2, 3-0) had a tough time trying to get things going offensively in the first quarter as Wingfield claimed a 17-10 advantage.

In the second frame, the Panthers managed to find their rhythm on offense and clobbered the Falcons with a 20-10 run to lead at halftime 30-27.

In the third quarter, Wingfield fought back with a 15-12 push to tied the contest at 42-all.

In the final period, both schools battled back and forth, but Ole Brook managed to gain control with a 22-14 run to claim the victory and stay undefeated in region action.

Damarius Brooks pumped in a game-high 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Panthers offense. Lazorian McNulty chipped in with 18 points. Tavis Moore provided nine points and helped on the boards with six rebounds.
