The Loyd Star Hornets and the Lady Hornets secured two big district wins over the Bassfield Yellowjackets Friday night in Region 7-2A basketball action at Loyd Star Gymnasium.

In girls’ action, the Lady Hornets managed to overcome a sluggish first quarter performance to thump the Lady Yellowjackets 50-35.

In the boys’ contest, the Hornets clobbered the Yellowjackets in the second and third quarters to gain a 76-64 victory.

Loyd Star returns for more district action Tuesday as they across Lincoln County to take on the archrivals the Enterprise Yellow Jackets for four games. The junior varsity girls will start the action at 4 p.m., followed by the JV boys at 5. The varsity games are schedule to begin at 6 p.m. for the girls and the boys at 7:30 p.m.

Loyd Star 50, Bassfield 35 

In the opening quarter of action, Bassfield (11-6, 2-2) quickly took advantage of Loyd Star slow start to claim a 15-14 lead after one quarter of action.

In the second period, the Lady Hornets managed to find their offensive rhythm and clobbered the Lady Yellowjackets with a 19-9 run to take a 33-24 lead into halftime.

In the second half of action, Loyd Star (15-4, 5-1) continued to overpower Bassfield as they outscored the Lady Yellowjackets 17-11 in the final two quarters to collect the win.

“The girls played really well offensively and defensively,” said Loyd Star coach Gene “Moochie” Britt. “After the first quarter, we managed to execute our game plan to collect the win.”

Mackenzie Smith and Megan Givens powered the Lady Hornets attack with nine points and five rebounds each. Faith Bergeron and Jordan Shelby contributed eight points each. Marcey Givens and Shelby were the leaders on the boards with nine rebounds apiece.

Derria White pumped in a game-high 12 points to lead the Bassfield Lady Yellowjackets. Michelei Hall chipped in with 10 points. JaQuala Green provided eight points.

Loyd Star 76, Bassfield 64 

In the boys’ contest, the Hornets and Yellowjackets battled to a 14-all tie after one quarter of action.

In the second quarter, the Hornets caught fire offensively and clobbered the Yellowjackets with a 20-12 run to carry a 34-26 lead into halftime.

In the second half of action, both team came out swinging as Loyd Star managed to maintain control of the contest with a 23-21 push to lead 57-47.

In the final period of play, the Hornets (15-4, 5-1) continued to play strong against Bassfield with a 19-17 run to secure the win.

“We shot the ball really well from the outside,” said Britt. “Javion played one of his best games tonight.

“Overall, I was very pleased with our team effort,” continued Britt. “Everyone played a big part in this win. Hopefully, we can continue this momentum as we prepare for Enterprise.”

Javion Beard poured in a game-high 34 points with a game-high eight treys to lead the Hornets. Edrick Alsworth pumped in 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Caleb Yarborough contributed 12 points and had three assists. Levi Redd helped on the boards with eight rebounds and scored eight points.

Jamal Peters paced the Bassfield Yellowjackets with 19 points. Rackeem Boothe chipped in with 16 points. Xavier Harper added 10 points, and Tyrique Smith scored eight points.

In junior varsity boys’ action,  the Bassfield Yellowjackets prevail 35-28 over Loyd Star.

Zach Arnold directed the Hornets on offense with 15 points. Patrick Price and Avery Leggett helped with four points each.

Mason Sims led Bassfield with 15 points. CaTravis Adams provided nine points.
