Co-Lin Lady Wolves knock off Pearl River, men stumbles

POPLARVILLE – The Co-Lin Lady Wolves survived a late scare in the second half Monday night as they managed to hold on and defeat the Pearl River Lady Wildcats 51-38 to remain undefeated on the season in South Division JUCO basketball action.

In the men’s contest, the Pearl River Wildcats outscored the Wolves in the second half to prevail 65-55.

Co-Lin continues action Thursday as they travel to Ellisville to take on the Jones County Bobcats for more South Division action. The women’s game is schedule to tip off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s contest at 7:30.

Co-Lin 51, Pearl River 38 

The Lady Wolves came out and quickly took care of business in the first half of action as they destroyed the Lady Wildcats to claim a 30-13 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Wildcats relied on a tough defensive game plan to slow down Co-Lin’s high octane offensive explosion as Pearl River rallied back and outscored the Lady Wolves 25-21, but could not over come Co-Lin’s large lead to steal away the victory.

Kelley Allen powered the Lady Wolves attack with a double-double performance of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Alexis Collins contributed 10 points. Tyra Gibson provided nine points and Jamilah Sanders added eight points. Toni Woods provided assistants on the boards with eight rebounds and Caroline Lumpkin helped with six rebounds.

Essence Pulliam was the top scorer for the Lady Wildcats with 12 points. Vamikka Smith and Pulliam both led on the boards with six rebounds each.

Pearl River 65, Co-Lin 55 

In the mens’ contest, the Wildcats and the Wolves battled back and forth in a close game as Pearl River took a 28-27 lead into halftime.

In the second half, both teams continued their tough bout, but the Wildcats managed to pull away from Co-Lin with a 37-28 run to end the game, which snapped a two-game winning streak for the Wolves.

Donte Watson was the only Wolf to score in double figures as he led with 11 points. Josh Washington chipped in with eight points and Joe Shelby scored seven points. Chris Williams powered the Wolves on the boards with 11 rebounds.

The Wildcats had three player to score in double digits as Darralyn Willis lead the charge with double-double performance of 20 points and 12 rebounds. Cortez Mitchell pumped in 14 points and grabbed six rebounds. Malik Clemmins provided 12 points.
