Local representatives are working on a bill in the state legislature to name a stretch of Highway 550 in memory of Peyton Flowers.

On Oct. 31, Flowers, a football player at Loyd Star Attendance Center, asked his coach if he could take a break during Loyd Star’s homecoming game. Flowers collapsed while sitting on the bench and was airlifted to Jackson Friday night.

Flowers died on Nov. 6 after an almost week-long stay at University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Rep. Bobby Moak (R-Bogue Chitto) said he received a number of phone calls from the community to honor Flowers.

“The community has come behind the Flowers family, in particular the Loyd Star community,” Moak said.

Rep. Becky Currie (R-Brookhaven) said the goal is to benefit the Flowers family as well as the community.

“I think that was a situation that grabbed the community,” she said. “We lost a great young man.

Originally, the bill proposed changing the speed limit to 42, Flowers’s football number. However, federal guidelines prohibit it. The legislators are now working to adapt the memorial. Moak and Currie believe by installing a sign the intent of the original bill will still be intact

“In the end, we hope we’re going to have something to remember him by for years to come,” Currie said.

Moak met with the Lincoln County Supervisors Monday to have a resolution passed to honor Flowers as part of the process.

While Flowers was hospitalized, people across the community, state and nation came together in an effort to pray for Flowers and his family.
