The Loyd Star Hornets and Lady Hornets celebrated senior night with a couple of big victories over the East Marion Eagles Friday night in Region 7-2A basketball action.

In the girls’ contest, the Lady Hornets claimed a 49-37 victory over the Lady Eagles.

In boys’ action, the Hornets clobbered the Eagles 69-53.

Loyd Star honored the basketball seniors in front of a packed house Friday night as they recognized Edrick Alsworth, Caleb Yarborough, Dorian Beard and Ryan Smith on the boys team and Victoria Cupit, Megan Givens and Marcey Givens on the girls team.

The Hornets and the Lady Hornets will return to action Tuesday as they prepare for a division road trip to Liberty to take on the Amite County Trojans for a pair of varsity games. The girls will tip off at 6 p.m., followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m.

Loyd Star 49, East Marion 37 

The Loyd Star Lady Hornets (17-4, 7-1) came out and quickly took care of business in the opening quarter, and they clobbered the Lady Eagles to gain a 16-9 advantage and outscored East Marion 8-7 in the second quarter to lead 24-16 at halftime.

In the second half, Loyd Star continued to out play East Marion in the last frames of action by stinging the Lady Eagles 25-21 to secured win.

“The girls played tough throughout the whole game,” said Loyd Star coach Gene “Moochie” Britt. “We shot and rebounded the ball really well. Overall, I was pleased with their effort and glad to get the win.”

Mackenzie Smith and Marcey Givens powered the Lady Hornets attack with 13 points apiece. Jordan Shelby chipped in eight points and five rebounds. Megan Givens contributed seven points. Hannah Dickerson was the leader on the boards with six rebounds and scored five points.

Asia Harvey was the top scorer for the Lady Eagles with 10 points.

Loyd Star 69, East Marion 53 

In the boys’ contest, the Hornets came out and overpowered the Eagles in the first half of action to carry a 33-22 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Loyd Star continued to play aggressively on offense and defense to outscore the Eagles 19-15 in the third quarter and 17-16 in the fourth quarter to claimed the victory.

Javion Beards provided another hot shooting night as he led the Hornets with 19 points and five rebounds. Edrick Alsworth chipped in with a double-double performance of 17 points and 11 rebounds. Levi Redd netted 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Caleb Yarborough dished out seven assists and scored eight points.

“Javion Beards provided another great shooting performance for us tonight,” Britt said. “Overall, I was very pleased with our offensive and defensive performances. I would also like to thank our fans for coming to show their support and cheer on the seniors in their last regular season home game.”

Jermaine Berkett was the top scorer for the Eagles with 16 points. Quincy Quinn contributed 15 points.

In junior varsity boys action,  Loyd Star defeated East Marion 48-21.

Zach Arnold led the Hornets with 15 points. Patrick Price provided seven points.

Darryl Hanes paced the Eagles with 16 points.
