Brookhaven Parks and Recreation Department will hold their fourth annual Senior Adult Prom on Feb. 23 at the Lincoln Civic Center.

The event, put together for those 50 or older, will be from 1 to 3 p.m. This year’s theme is “Shake, Rattle and Roll.”

The prom, which is free to the public, comes after the fifth year anniversary celebration on Thursday morning.

“There was so much fun,” Carolyn Reed, a regular at the Jimmy Furlow Senior Center, said.

She said there was fellowshipping and reminiscing on the past five years of coming to the center and participating in activities. Reed said there was also plenty of good food, which they ate while talking about things they’ve done and what the future holds.

“Most of all, everyone was thankful for the building, to come and do things together, enjoy each other’s special dishes and talk about how blessed we are,” Reed said.

Reed and Nancy Pittman, another community member involved at the Furlow Center, said for the celebration the building was dressed up in Valentine’s colors with live camellias and Valentine’s hearts. They said the celebration was kicked off by 30 minutes of entertainment from husband and wife musical duo Dan and Frankie Henley.

Although the center just celebrated it’s fifth year of service to the community this upcoming senior adult prom will be the fourth one held. Originally done by Southern Care the prom has been planned for the last two years by Kail Garrett who works at the Furlow Center.

“It’s a little nerve-wracking,” Garrett said about her first year planning for 400 people.

She said she has been planning for the event since August of 2014 with a committee of six members. She said there will be light refreshments, line dancers, round dancers, pictures, door prizes and, matching their 1950s theme, an Elvis impersonator.
