MOORHEAD – The Copiah-Lincoln Lady Wolves swept the Mississippi Delta Lady Trojans on Thursday in Moorhead, though the results weren’t exactly what head coach Allen Kent was looking for.

“We were fortunate to win game one,” said Kent. “It was one of the worst performances by a team that I’ve coached.”

Last week, in a sweep of Delta, the Lady Wolves held the Lady Trojans to three combined hits in two games. In game one on Thursday the Lady Trojans posted 17 hits. Freshmen Lauren Braisher, Brittany Barbay, and McKenzie Brock each had two RBIs apiece for Co-Lin. Barbay hit two doubles as did freshman catcher Jessica Crum. Brock and freshman infielder Kaitlyn Taylor hit a triple apiece.

Adrienne Wallace, Barbay, Brashier (2), Brock (2), Mattie Avants (2), and Payton Sheffield (2) all safely hit singles for the Wolves.

“We didn’t run the bases very well and Delta came ready to play,” said Kent.

Starting pitcher Lucy Lewis gave up three earned runs on six hits in 2.2 innings of work. Kamry Creel pitched 5.1 innings for Co-Lin and gave up five earned runs on 11 hits and struck out seven Lady Trojans.

The teams were tied 7-7 after seven innings. It looked like Co-Lin might cruise to the win after scoring five runs in the top of the eight, but Delta responded to score four runs in the bottom of the inning. Creel got Gabbie Smith to ground out to end the game and allow Co-Lin to escape with the too close win.

Game two was called due to darkness with Co-Lin leading 13-0 after two complete innings. Wallace and Crum had three RBIs apiece. Wallace hit a double as did Taylor, Crum, and Breanna McKenzie. McKenzie, the leading returning hitter for the Lady Wolves from 2014, made her season debut on Thursday after recovering from an offseason injury.

Crum, who was named national player of the week earlier in the day, hit her third homerun of the season on a two-run blast in the top of the first inning. Brashier, Barbay, McKenzie, Carmen Perry, and Greta Carley (2) all singled safely in game two. Taylor, McKenzie and Perry all had an RBI apiece.

Rheagan Welch picked up the win after giving up no hits, striking out two, and walking one in 2.0 innings of work.

“Jessica Crum had another big day offensively and I thought McKenzie Brock and Kaitlyn Taylor both had a really good day as well,” said Kent.

Co-Lin in next scheduled to play on Tuesday, Feb. 17 in Wesson against Coahoma. First pitch of the double header is slated for 1 p.m.
