Lady Bears grab win, Bears fall

SALEM – The final game of the regular season for West Lincoln was a road trip to Walthall county to face the Salem Wildcats Thursday night in high school basketball action.

 The Lady Bears (10-15, 5-5)  coming off a season high scoring game on Tuesday night against Bassfield took a quick lead in the first quarter and finished with a 17-4 lead. West Lincoln maintained the tempo of the game to take a 33-14 lead at halftime.

The Lady Bears remained calm throughout the third quarter and continued to lead 48-32 after the third quarter. The Lady Wildcats clawed back into the game during the fourth quarter and got within two points before the Lady Bears stretched the lead back to five points and finished with the win 58-53.

Hanna Moak led the Lady Bears in scoring with 28 points and eight rebounds. Jana Case added 11 points and 12 rebounds. Layton Sills had 10 points and four assists. Alli Mullins contributed seven points. Demeshia Deer grabbed seven rebounds.

The Bears (12-14,7-3)  attacked the Wildcats early and gained a 17-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. Salem outscored the Bears in the second quarter and narrowed the lead to three points with West Lincoln taking a 34-31 advantage into halftime.

Salem managed to briefly take a one-point lead in the third before West Lincoln regained the lead and finished the third quarter 50-44. Both teams fought defensively in the fourth quarter as the score was tied at 68 with 30.2 seconds. Salem gained possession, held the ball and drove into the lane for the last shot with 1.8 seconds remaining. A floor length shot by the Bears fell short and final score was 68-70.

Leading scorer for West Lincoln was Ronnie Edwards with 28 points and nine rebounds. Ke-Shaun London added 15 points, Javian Mackabee eight points and Lofton Sills six points.

The Region 7-2A tournament begins Tuesday at Amite County. Lincoln County will be represented in the tournament by West Lincoln, Loyd Star, and Enterprise. The tournament brackets will be released Saturday.
