Cobras advance to the Title game

WOODVILLE – The Wesson Cobras knocked off the Franklin County Bulldogs 64-55 Thursday night in advance to the championship game in Region 7-3A tournament action at Wilkinson County.
In last Wednesday night action, the Wesson Lady Cobras saw their season come an end after falling to the Wilkinson County Lady Wildcats 52-45.
Tournament play will continue today at Woodville with Wesson Cobras facing the Crystal Springs Tigers for the district title. Game time is 8:30 p.m.
Wilkinson County 52, Wesson 45
The Wesson Lady Cobras traveled to Wilkinson County for the opening night of the Mississippi High School Activities Association 2015 Region 7 3A Tournament. The Lady Cobras fell to the Lady Wildcats Wednesday night with a final score of 45-52.
Top Lady Cobra player, junior Jashia Smith, scored a total of 24 points. Junior Carnesha Green was another top scorer by scoring nine points. The Lady Cobras were 9/24 in free throw action.
The top player of the game for the Lady Wildcats was Meisha Norman, who topped the scoreboard with 20 points. Gabrieka Cotten contributed 14 points. The Lady Wildcats were 6/14 in free throw action.
Wesson coach Rusty Newman commented, “We just didn’t play well tonight. Our shots wouldn’t fall and we got frustrated. This was a tough loss and a bad way to end our season. I’m proud of my girls for their effort this season.”
Wesson 64, Franklin County 55
The Wesson Cobras will battle for the district championship after defeating the Franklin County Bulldogs Thursday night with a final score of 64-55.
Top Cobra players included senior Dartavious Dixon who scored 18 points and sophomore Eric Rhymes with 12 points. Dixon had seven rebounds, two steals and two assists. Rhymes had six rebounds. Top defender for the Cobras was senior Farrod Green with 10 rebounds, four steals and one assist. The Cobras were 13/20 from the free throw line.
The Bulldogs top player was junior Kel Covington, who had a point total of 18, provided three rebounds and two steals. Senior Vincent Briggs had 15 points, six rebounds, one assist and two steals. Top defender was senior Danzel Allen with nine rebounds, four steals, one assist and scored six points. The Bulldogs had an average of 11/20 in free throw action.
“This was a good team win for us tonight,” commented Cobra coach Rusty Newman. “Offensively I thought we moved the ball well and got good shots. Defensively we had our moments. I’m excited about playing for the district title and I just hope we can show up and play with a lot of heart and effort.”
