Co-Lin and Panola College split doubleheader

WESSON – The host Copiah-Lincoln Wolves split a Friday afternoon doubleheader with the Panola College Ponies in Wesson. The Wolves took game one 4-3 and the Ponies from Carthage, Texas captured game two 12-2.

Co-Lin 4, Panola 3 

Clutch hitting and pitching for Co-Lin (5-5) was the story of game one, as the Wolves saw their sophomores step up to give them a lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Trailing 3-2, Co-Lin began the inning with a walk by sophomore outfielder Choc Hubbard. Hubbard then scored on a triple by freshman catcher Reed Taylor. Taylor then scored the game winning run on an RBI single by sophomore Tanner Parvin. The Ponies could not solve sophomore pitcher Wesley Watts.

Watts moved to the mound from second base in the top of the sixth inning with one away. Relieving starter Cole Langdon, Watts inherited runners on second and third. Watts got a groundout, walked a batter, and then got another groundout to end the inning. Watts got two more groundouts and a strike out to end the game in the top of the seventh and pick up his first win of the season. Langdon gave up three earned runs on five hits in 5.1 innings of work.

Sophomore first baseman Austin Resser continued to swing a hot bat for Co-Lin as he went 2-3 with a double and a RBI. Outfielder Jeremy Moore also finished 2-3 with a double and a RBI. Sophomore Adrian Brown also hit safely for Co-Lin.

Panola College 12, Co-Lin 2 (6 Innings) 

For the third consecutive doubleheader the Wolves would drop game two after picking up a win in the opener. Panola (3-9) blew the game open by scoring eight combined runs in the third and fourth innings. The Ponies used three homeruns including a grand slam to pad their lead. Freshman starter Austin Irby took the loss on the hill after giving up five runs (three earned) in 2.0 innings of work. Jordan Antley, Alex Smith, and Austin Douglas all pitched in relief.

qAdrian Brown hit a double and notched a RBI for Co-Lin. Antley (RBI single), Jeremey Moore, Bailey Warren, Choc Hubbard, and Austin Resser all hit safely for Co-Lin.

qCo-Lin is next schedule to play on Sunday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m. in Summit as they take on the Southwest Bears in the opening doubleheader of the Coca-Cola Challenge presented by Powerade.
