Hornets fall to Bay Springs

BAY SPRINGS – The Loyd Star Hornets travel to Bay Springs to take on the Bay Springs Bulldogs Saturday night in the second round of the Class 2A state playoffs. The Hornets suffered a tough 76-46 loss to Bulldogs in their quest to make it to the Jackson.

“Overall, we had a great year and my guys played hard in every game,” said Loyd Star coach Gene “Moochie” Britt. “We just got beat by a really good Bay Spring team, whom I believe should win the State Championship.

“In the first half, we competed really well against Bay Springs, but the second half was a different story,” continued Britt. “We had plenty of opportunities to score but our shots would not fall for us. Overall, I was please with our efforts and we had a great season.”

The Hornets conclude the season with an overall record of 20 wins and seven loss. The boys finished with a 9-1 record in Region 7-2A action.

Bay Springs 76, Loyd Star 46 

In the opening quarter of the contest, the Hornets and the Bulldogs battle in a close contest as Bay Springs claimed a 18-13 lead.

In the second quarter, the Bulldogs continued to increase their lead with a 19-12 run to lead at halftime 37-25.

In the second half, Bay Springs managed to outscore Loyd Star 39-21 in the final two frames of action to advance to the next round in Jackson.

Brad Jasper was the top scorer for the Hornets with 15 points. Caleb Yarborough contributed 10 points and had two assists. Levi Redd was the leader on the boards with 12 rebounds and added four points. Edrick Alsworth helped on the boards with 10 rebounds and scored five points.

Bruce Stevens powered the Bulldogs’ offense with 21 points. Jonnas Spivey chipped in with 15 points. Nick Fenderson and Javien Hamilton cashed in 11 points apiece.
