CLINTON – Trailing 56-40 with 9:22 remaining, the Copiah-Lincoln Lady Wolves looked dead in the water in their NJCAA Region XXXIII quarterfinal matchup with the Holmes Lady Bulldogs. The underdogs from Goodman were shooting layups and Co-Lin appeared to be on their way to suffering their first loss since the 2014 Region Tournament. Co-Lin did wake up, and did so just in time, as they chipped away the Holmes lead and took a last second 69-68 win over Holmes, Thursday afternoon.

With 30 seconds remaining and trailing 66-65, Co-Lin forward Arnissayur Robinson went to the free throw line for two shots. Co-Lin struggled from the line all night, finishing 17-29 for the game. Robinson knocked down both shots to put Co-Lin ahead 67-66. Holmes went up 68-67 on a runner in the lane by Carmesha Nalls.

Nalls scored on a scoop shot from just inside the free throw line with the shot clock winding down. The ball went through the net with 6.8 seconds remaining and Co-Lin completely caught Holmes off-guard with how quickly they pushed the ball down the court. Lady Wolves point guard Alexis Collins rushed the ball down the center of the court, drawing a scrambling Holmes defense. She dropped a pass off to a cutting Robinson on the baseline. Robinson made the layup to put Co-Lin up 69-68 with 1.1 seconds left. Robinson was fouled, but missed her free throw. Holmes gained possession and called a timeout after the miss, but could not get a shot off before the buzzer.

Perhaps suffering from a hangover after winning the MACJC State Championship last week in Wesson, the Lady Wolves looked heavy legged throughout much of the game. Holmes crushed Co-Lin on the boards all night, as they grabbed 60 rebounds to 41 by Co-Lin. The Lady Bulldogs also made scoring inside difficult with the presence of 6-foot-2 LaShonda Wilson, 6-foot Jamieca Sheriff, and 5-foot-11 Tiffany Jones around the basket.

Co-Lin was led by 18 points from Collins. Freshman forward and reigning MACJC Player of the Week Kelley Allen posted her sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jamilah Sanders scored 11 points off the bench for Co-Lin. Robinson finished with 10 points and freshman Tenazhia Hinkson came off the bench to score 10 points as well.

Nalls and Aja Williams scored 16 points apiece for the Lady Bulldogs (16-9).

Co-Lin (27-0) moves on to play Itawamba (21-4) tonight at 6 p.m. An audio broadcast of the game can be heard at www.colinathletics.com or on WMJU 104.3 FM.
