Lady Hornets defeat Lawrence Co.

The Loyd Star Lady Hornets defeated the Lawrence County Lady Cougars 10-1 Saturday in fastpitch softball action at Jan Smith Delaughter Field.

The Lady Hornets (11-2, 2-0) will resume action Tuesday as they host the East Marion Lady Eagles for a varsity doubleheader in Region 7-2A softball action. Game time is at 5 p.m.

The Lady Cougars (12-4, 2-2) will also be playing Tuesday as they host the North Pike Lady Jaguars for a big Region 7-4A test. Junior varsity action begins at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6:15 p.m.

Loyd Star 10, Lawrence Co. 1

The Lady Hornets and the Lady Cougars battled in a close contest in the first three innings of action as Loyd Star commanded a 3-1 lead.

In the fourth, fifth and sixth inning, the Lady Hornets outscored the Lady Cougars 7-0 to secured the win.

Kelsie McCullough was the winning pitcher for the Lady Hornets with two strikeouts and no walks. Mackenzie Smith (0K, 0BB) also pitched the final two innings in relief.

Elizabeth Smith suffered the setback on the mound for the Lady Cougars with one strikeout and no walks. Jordan Harp (4K, 0BB) pitched three innings in relief.

Ali Gartman sparked the Lady Hornets at the plate with a home run, a triple and a single. Abagail Thornton fueled the flames with three singles. Julie Smith and Madison Jones provided two singles apiece. McCullough ripped a double. Hitting safely were Brooks Rushing and Megan Norton.

Elizabeth Smith was the top hitter for the Lady Cougars at the plate with a double and a single. Madduz Kirkland contributed two singles. Jamie Martin and Tiera Collins hit safely.

 In junior varsity action,  Lawrence County nipped Loyd Star 3-2.

Aly Floyd (1K, 1BB) absorbed the setback on the mound for Loyd Star with one strikeout and one walk. Ali Gartman (3K, 0BB) started for the Lady Hornets and pitched three innings.

Kaylea Smith and Marley Poole paced the Lady Hornets’ offense with a single each.
