Co-Lin men sweep Northeast, fall to Itawamba

BOONEVILLE – The Copiah-Lincoln Community College men’s swept Northeast Mississippi in a rain-shortened match 5-1 but were shutout by the defending state champion Itawamba Indians 9-0 in recent tennis action

Co-Lin 5, Northeast 1

The Wolves won all doubles matches as Dwain Perkins and Will Pennington defeated Wesley Tye and Noah Wright 8-4 at No. 1, Braxton Hinton and Drake Nelson had the closest match edging Adam Holley and Reid Price 9-7 at No. 2, and Brandon Nettles and Coleman Carraway blanked Payton Pearce and Jesus Osorio 8-0 at No. 3.

The teams were able to finish three singles matches before the rain and sleet started. Co-Lin’s Dwain Perkins blanked Noah Wright 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 and Drake Nelson took care of Roberto DeLaSantos at 6-2, 6-1. Northeast’s only win came at No. 2 as Wesley Tye rallied to defeat Will Pennington 1-6, 6-4, 10-8 in a tiebreaker. The match between Braxton Hinton and Adam Holley was suspended with Hinton leading 6-0, 1-0.

Itawamba 9, Co-Lin 0 

The defending state champion Indians flexed their muscle blanking the Wolves in all single and double matches.

The closet singles match came at No. 5 singles as Co-Lin’s Drake Nelson took the first set 6-3 over Joseph Summers. Summers rallied to take the second set 6-0 and the tiebreaker 10-5.

In other singles action, Nate Pinkeny defeated Dwain Perkins 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1, Austin McElwain blanked Will Pennington 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2, Braxton Hinton fell to ICC’s Cody Coins 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3, Brandon Nettles fell to David McElwain 6-0. 6-0 at No. 4 and Coleman Carraway lost to Drew Ballard 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles action, Pinkney and Coins blanked Perkins and Pennington 8-0 at No. 1, McElwain and McElwain defeated Hinton and Nelson 8-4, and Summers and Ballard beat Nettles and Carraway 8-1.

Co-Lin hosts Hinds today beginning at 2 p.m.
