Annual Tucker golf tournament moves to May

The nineteenth annual “The Tucker” charity golf tournament will be held at Brookhaven Country Club a little earlier than usual and with a few changes to its format. This year’s tournament will be held on Memorial Day weekend rather than Labor Day, due to football season, hunting season, scheduling conflicts and overall bad weather.

The golf tournament was founded by Josh Smith in honor of his brother Lt. Michael Tucker Smith, a recent graduate of West Point who was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia and died in a car accident on Aug. 31, 1996.

The Tucker supported Habitat for Humanity for 14 years before partnering with the Folds of Honor Foundation in 2010. In the past four years, The Tucker has raised over $200,000 for the charity by hosting a “Patriot Golf Day.” The money raised goes to scholarships providing post-secondary educational scholarships for children and spouses of U.S. Military service men and women killed or disabled serving our country.

Josh Smith said this year’s tournament format is being adjusted in order to provide the best experience for its patrons.

“This year, the number of teams we can take dropped from 80 teams to 42 teams, so space is very limited,” Smith said. “A smaller tournament means patrons get more bang for their buck.”

Entry fees are now being accepted, and corporate sponsors will have priority, according to Smith, who urges golfers to forward entry fees as soon as possible to reserve a spot.

“We have been a national top-25 event three times, and a top-10 event one year during our partnership with Folds of Honor,” he said. “[We] hope to have our best year to date.”

Smith asks that golfers review and contribute where they can. All donations will go toward the Folds of Honor Scholarship Foundation setup for the State of Mississippi.
