Lady Cobras clinch Region 7-3A crown

WESSON- The Wesson Lady Cobras battled their district rival the Franklin County Lady Bulldogs in Wesson Tuesday night and honored their only senior on the team, Kayla Brit, on senior night with a 9-4 victory to clinch the Region 7-3A crown.
The Lady Cobras will host Salem Thursday, starting at 4 p.m.
Franklin County will travel to play McLaurin Thursday night for the opening round of the Class 3A state playoffs.

The Lady Cobras defeated the Lady Bulldogs in a 9-4 win. Wesson took an early lead when sophomore Sabria Green hit a homerun to put the first run on the scoreboard.
Franklin County evened up the score in the thidrd inning by taking advantage of Wesson’s error but the Lady Cobras would reclaim the lead when seventh grader Catherine Wilson hit a three RBI double in the fourth inning.
“It’s always good to beat a district rival team but it’s great to be undefeated in the district and win the championship,” said Lady Cobra coach Michelle Nunnery. “I am proud of the girls for their team effort and now we need to start preparing for the playoffs.”
Wesson’s starting pitcher, Carrie McSweyn collected the win with one strikeout and two walks. Amber Brinson closed the closed out the contest for the Lady Cobras throwing four strikeouts. Brinson also had a double and a single at the plate.
Other top hitters for the Lady Cobras were Green with a homerun and single, Wilson with one double and a single, Harmoni Ashley provided a triple, and Shelbi Maxwell with two singles. Ashley was top fielder for the Lady Cobras with seven outs at first base.
For the Lady Bulldogs, pitcher Emily Smith had one strikeout and four walks. Tabitha Thompson and Sierra Bethley paced the Lady Bulldogs at the plate with two singles each. Top fielders were Shelley Smith at shortstop, Alyssa Case at centerfield and Emilee Wallace at first base with three outs each.
In junior varsity action, The Lady Cobras defeated the Lady Bulldogs with a final score of 5-3.
