For many, spring is a chance to clean out the old and bring in the new.

Faith Presbyterian Church will host a rummage sale Saturday that can help do just that. The rummage sale will also benefit the youth group as they raise funds for a mission trip to a Chippewa reservation in a remote area of northern Minnesota.

Members of Faith Presbyterian have donated items for the indoor garage sale, which will take place at the old billiards building downtown on Whitworth Street. The sale begins at 6 a.m.

The large space is filled to the brim with a variety of items including mattresses, bed frames and headboards; couches, recliners, other living room chairs and loveseats; kitchen tables and chairs; mirrors, lamps and other house wares; décor; toys for all ages; clothes and costumes; tools and hardwares; electronics including a slew of television sets and much more.

Faith Presbyterian Youth Minister Chandler Rowlen said the rummage sale is a large part of efforts to raise $15,000 to send the senior high school youth group

to Minnesota from July 25 to Aug. 1.

“Every student that is going has had to send out individual fundraising letters,” Chandler said. “Our church’s missions committee has given us a certain amount of money, and the rest of it is up to stuff like this for us to try and raise [the rest].”

Faith Presbyterian has held similar sales before, but it is a first for Rowlen and his wife, Leah, who are in their second year working with the church. The Rowlens said they are excited for this trip, which will be the first time working with this particular mission.

“The church itself has partnered with a mission group in Belize, but we’ve never done a local trip to an Indian reservation as far as we know,” Leah said. “We’ve done some foreign missions.”

In conjunction with the Mission to the World organization, the Faith Presbyterian youth group will partner with Tom and Becky Pollock of Redby Community Church, who minister to the nearby Chippewa Indian Reservation through children’s and youth ministry, men’s and women’s discipleship, as well as a soup kitchen and food assistance program. According to the MTW website, the reservation is a “spiritually dark” area, and Leah said they will work to help in the impoverished area.

“We’re going to help by going in and doing service projects,” Leah said. “We’ll have a VBS [Vacation Bible School]. We’ll be working with the kids, having community children’s activities and give our youth a chance to see where the need is in America, not just in a foreign country.”

As the Rowlens worked to set up the rummage sale, many students from the junior high school youth group were helping carry and organize the mass of items. Leah said she is thankful for kids willing to help and serve – even for a trip they aren’t old enough to go on yet. It’s an attitude of service the Rowlens hope can help expand their mission field not only in Brookhaven but elsewhere in the U.S.

“There’s a need in Brookhaven as well, and so we hope that we can spur them to have local missions as well as foreign missions one day,” Leah said. “Not only just spreading God’s word by word-of-mouth but by serving. And we want our youth to see that need, and to respond to it.”
