Mamie Martin prepares for end of school fun

Students at Mamie Martin will soon celebrate the end of school with a fun-filled day of activities at the elementary school’s campus.

The event on May 18 will give children a chance to burn off some steam and celebrate the completion of the school year. The day also serves as the PTA’s largest fundraiser.

“It’s just a fun day,” PTA board member Carrie Sones said. “They’ve worked so hard all year, and it gives the teachers and students a day off.”

The campus will be set up with different stations the classes will rotate through, including an inflatables area, an area with games, a popcorn area and a fun run.

For the fun run, students have been working in their physical education class to be able to run one mile. Students are encouraged to run four laps around the softball field, which equals one mile. Sones said some children go above that reaching for two miles.

Students are encouraged to collect pledges to help raise money for their school. The boy and girl who raises the most pledges will receive a bike that has been donated by Ole Brook Pediatric Denistry.

Sones said the biggest funds come from their corporate sponsors, which include Bank of Brookhaven, Belk-Ditcharo Dental, Boerner Law Firm, Brookhaven Dental Center, Brookhaven ENT, Brookhaven OB-GYN, Brookhaven Radiology, Farm Bureau, Glass Doctor, Simmons Eye Clinic and Trustmark.

Sones said this year the PTA has used funds raised to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, buy medals for Martin Stars, update the teacher lounge and bathrooms and much more.

Anyone interested in donating to the PTA can contact PTA President Missy Kilpatrick at 601-320-1235 or Mamie Martin Principal Rob McCreary at 601-833-7359.
