The city will soon be replacing 20 fire hydrants around the city.
Keith Lewis, head of the water department, said after testing the fire hydrants, there are 20 that need to be replaced. Lewis said his budget allowed for the repair of 15 hydrants, totaling $134,000, with the cost to replace a single hydrant at $8,900. The Board of Aldermen moved to revise the budget Tuesday night by the amount of $47,000 in order to replace all 20 hydrants, which are marked by white paint around the city.
Brookhaven Chief of Police Bobby Bell addressed the board on a police vehicle that was totaled in September. Bell said $21,000 was received by the insurance company and he asked the board for $2,500 to allow for the purchase of another police vehicle, totaling $23,000. The board moved to approve his request.
Mike McKenzie of WGK Engineering briefed the board on the sewer rehab project, for which bids will be opened at 2 p.m. on June 15. McKenzie said most of the sewer rehab includes re-lining the pipes, and that digging up streets should not happen too often or be a burden on residents.
Alderman Ward 4 Shirley Estes, asked that board go ahead and start adding pesticide specified for mosquito larvae to ditches in which standing water accumulates. The city does this to ditches that do not drain properly as to squelch the mosquito population as summer begins.
In other business, the board moved to:
• Approve for Chris Davis to attend Rope Rescue II Class at State Fire Academy on June 8 through 11 with the city covering expenses including the $68 registration.
• Approve for Jeff Ainsworth to attend the Fire Instructor 1041-1 Class at State Fire Academy on June 29 through July 3, with city to pay expenses including a $380 registration fee.
