District 7 baseball team announced

WESSON – A field of 74 players tried out Wednesday for the District 7 State Games baseball team, in hopes becoming one of the rising juniors and seniors from Southwest Mississippi and Louisiana private school playing districts to represent the team.

The field was cut to 19 players after the tryout, which was held at Co-Lin’s Sullivan Baseball Field.

Coached by Tyler Parvin and Jose Acosta, the team is made up of 19-rising junior and senior baseball players from Southwest Mississippi.

Members of the team are as follows: Cole Jackson, 2B/SS, Silliman Academy; Britt Netterville, SS/RHP, Centreville Academy; Cory Lewis, 1B, Parklane Academy; De’Martre Collins, CF/LHP, Franklin County; T-Tez Cole, OF, Lawrence County; Scotter Ginn, SS, Columbia; Brant Garrett, 1B/3B/RHP, Centreville Academy; Sam McWilliams, RHP/OF/SS, Simpson Academy; Zach Thomas, Utility, Parklane Academy; Luke McKenzie, RHP/OF, Columbia Academy; Triston Cowan, Catcher, Simpson Academy; Matthew Harrison, SS/RHP, Simpson Academy; Logan McDowell, RHP/OF, Columbia; Jacob Gill, OF, North Pike; Brantley Hughes, 2B/SS, North Pike; Colby White, RHP/3B, West Marion; Penn Wilson, LHP/1B/OF, Brookhaven; and Chris Pittman, 3B, Columbia.

Also making the team as an alternate was outfielder Casey Anders of Parklane.

A few exciting highlights occurred during the tryouts- T-Tez Cole of Lawrence County was the only player out of the 74 players that tried out to hit a home run at Sullivan Field during the nearly four-hour long tryout.

Luke McKenzie, of Columbia Academy, showed off his pitching arm with the best velocity with an 87mph fastball. De’Martre Collins, of Franklin County, ran the fastest time in a 60-yard dash with a 6.6 in the workout.

The District 7 team will report to Meridian Community College on June 24 for practice and scout day. The double-elimination 8-team tournament begins June 25 in front of college coaches and MLB scouts.
