In a back-to-school extravaganza on Aug. 1, Brookhaven Academy will host former Miss Mississippi Jasmine Murray and Duck Dynasty stars John Luke and Sadie Robertson in an effort to promote the gospel and raise funds.
Brian Emory, director of development at BA, said the event, which will be held on the football field, will kick off with Jasmine Murray as she shares her ministry “13 Going on 30.” Murray’s program addresses teenage pregnancy, drug and alcohol abuse, eating disorders and dropping out of school.
Murray, a Mississippi School of the Arts graduate and former contestant on American Idol, will also perform two songs.
Andi Cotton, a BA graduate, and her band will then perform until John Luke and Sadie arrive. Emory said Shannon Miller will emcee the event as they open up the floor for questions. The event will mostly center around Sadie’s book, “Live Original.”
“It is so important that [students] see the way she handles herself in relationships,” Emory said. “If they hear from a 17-year-old, hopefully it will have more impact.”
After the Robertsons leave the stage, Emory said Jon Daniel, an evangelist from Country Woods Baptist Church in Byram, will present the gospel and lead an altar call.
Emory said the event was prompted by a small concert BA hosted last year. He estimated about 75 students were there, and 17 committed their lives to Christ that night.
“I thought we’ve got to do something bigger,” Emory said. “As a Christian school, we want to present the gospel in everything they do.”
The event costs $10, and Emory encourages people to buy tickets ahead of time at Brookhaven Academy’s Development Office, Valvoline Instant Oil Change, Pete’s Interiors by Wallace, Co-Lin Feed & Seed or Expectations. People can also call 601-833-4041 ext. 22.
Because the Robertsons’ visit was paid for by sponsors, all money raised will go toward projects supporting Brookhaven Academy.
“That is the nature of the business when you’re an independent school,” Emory said, adding that the school is always fundraising to support their goal of a quality education in a Christian environment.
Emory said they expect between 2,000 and 3,000 people to attend.
