The Wesson Lady Cobras will rely on their scrappiness, unwillingness to give up and their strong defense as they kick off their slowpitch softball season Aug. 15, in slowpitch softball as they travel to Puckett to battle the Puckett Lady Wolves tournament.

Wesson will have two seniors providing leadership on and off the field with Cheyenne Gladden and Kaitlyn Smith.

” We’re a scrappy bunch that will not give up easily,” said Wesson head coach Michelle Nunnery. “I also believe that we will be a very solid team on defense.”

Nunnery will be starting her second season at the helm. The Lady Cobras look to improve on a 12-15 record last year and 6-0 record in district.

Wesson will have eight returning players back to help in the field: Cheyenne Gladden, Kaitlyn Smith, Harmoni Ashley, Aurianna Vaughn, Amber Brinson, Brooke Jones, Riley Smith and Catherine Wilson.

Wesson lost only one player to graduation last year in shortstop Kayla Britt.

“We have a special group of girls from seventh graders all the way to our seniors,” said Nunnery. “Each one will play a roll in making our team better and successful. I can’t wait to see how this season goes. It should be an exciting one to say the least.”

Kaitlyn Smith was among one of the leaders returning that led the team in 2014 with a .518 batting average. Ashley batted a .473, Brinson at .346, Gladden .329 and Vaughn at .361,

The Lady Cobras assistant coach is Dale Lowery. Nunnery has 21 players on her squad.

The Lady Cobras’ first home game will be against the Brookhaven Lady Panthers on Aug. 20. The junior varsity game will precede the varsity game.
