Program will provide free dental care in schools

The Lincoln County School District Board of Trustees signed off on the Mississippi Seals dental care program Monday night.

The program provides free dental screenings, fluoride varnish applications and dental sealants for students. Although schools must fit criteria — for rural districts, they must have a median income that is at or below 235 percent of the federal poverty line — all students within the school are eligible.

The program recruits qualified dental professionals from the community to implement a school-based dental sealant program. Schools are selected based on program eligibility, according to the state Dept. of Health. The dental care is provided using portable equipment or mobile units for minimal class time disruption. Parental consent is required for participation, and dental referrals are provided to all participants for follow-up care.
