MAGNOLIA – Lawrence County hammered South Pike 25-5 in Division 7-4A slowpitch softball action Monday night, at South Pike High School. Lawrence County nearly ended the game via the 12-run rule, after 4 innings. Forced to play a fifth inning, the Lady Cougars exploded for 12 runs in that frame, creating the blowout score.
Lawrence County led throughout, scoring 3 in the first, 2 in the second, 5 in the third, and 3 in the fourth, before the big fifth-inning explosion.
Zyon Feazell went 3-for-3, with a booming homerun that rolled all the way to the fence (the game was played on South Pike’s baseball field). Callie Fortenberry, Josie Nations, and Sydney Pevey each had two hits, with Fortenberry also slamming an in-the-park homerun. Nations would have likely done the same, but was tripped up rounding first base, and had to settle for a single.
Tyranesha Davis, Barri Rogers, Jordan Harp, Amanda Rushing, and Alyssa Lambert each had 1 hit. Rogers pitched a five-inning complete game.
South Pike got a 2-run homer from Shakeria Brister, which forced the game into a fifth inning. Adrianna Smith added a triple. Ilana Hickman, Jakyrie Brister, Tiara Osny, Taylor Weatherspoon, Fredericka Matthews, Bobriania Perkins, and Tre’Una Smith had singles.
“It wasn’t as easy as the score might indicate,” said Lady Cougar coach Meleah Howard. “It was sort of a struggle for much of the night, but it worked out ok in the end. We weren’t as sharp as we could have been.”
Howard’s girls improved to 6-1 overall, and 1-0 in the division. LCHS will return home to host Franklin County on Tuesday.
Lawrence County also won in junior varsity play, winning 12-7.
