The Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars suffered two tough setbacks this week as they fell to ACCS 6-1 and lost to Central Hinds 6-1 in MAIS girls soccer action.
The Lady Cougars (1-5) will return to the field Wednesday to battle MAIS newcomer and district opponent Natchez Cathedral.
ACCS 6, BA 1
Brookhaven Academy lost to ACCS 6-1 in district action in Natchez.
The Lady Cougars fell behind in the game as they struggled to adapt to their opponent’s field and their aggressive nature throughout the night.
“I thought that the ACCS girls really outmatched us tonight with their intensity and aggressiveness,” said BA coach Mark LeBlanc. “I was very disappointed in our effort as a team. We were awful in the first three quarters of the game and finally decided to compete a little bit in the fourth quarter. I am not sure why we decided to lay an egg tonight, but that’s exactly what we did.”
The only goal of the game for the Lady Cougars came on a well played cross from Harley Smith to Shelby Flum, who hit a laser shot into the corner of the net.
“I was very happy for Shelby Flum to get her first goal of the year,” said LeBlanc. “She was exactly where she was supposed to be on that cross and was able to finish it with a goal. It was a bright spot in the otherwise disappointing effort from our soccer team.”
Central Hinds 6, BA 1
The Lady Cougars fought hard against a very good team and played inspired soccer in the first half. They trailed Central Hinds 2-1 at the half.
The second half was a different story as Central Hinds relied on some long, well placed shots to score two goals in the first five minutes of the second half and added two more in the fourth quarter to win the game 6-1.
“Offensively, we did manage to get create a lot shot of opportunities, but we just can’t seem to finish with any consistency,” said LeBlanc. “Julianna Mills was able to score in the first half on a through ball from Madelyn Ogelsby. We had many other quality chances; Anna Morgan Smith played a great pass to Julianna early in the game and she got free for a one on one opportunity, but her shot was a little wide. Shelby Flum and Harley Smith also had some good opportunities in the second half but the Central Hinds goal tender did a great job stopping their shots. I can’t complain about our teams effort today, we were just a little over matched.”
