This year, King’s Daughters Medical Center is teaming up with Make-A-Wish to send one of Brookhaven’s own to Disney World.

The KDMC team is going the extra mile, through T-shirt sales, a spaghetti dinner and a silent auction to make sure they can cover the wish cost of Brookhaven Academy’s Magnolia Jones. The dinner will be Tuesday at the Lincoln Civic Center from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The auction will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Lisa Shann, the KDMC coordinator, said tickets are limited and individuals should call 601-823-5204 as soon as possible to reserve their plate. She said regardless of whether or not a spaghetti ticket has been purchased, anyone is welcome to come to the silent auction.

Shann said sponsoring a local child almost always makes the fundraising more effective because the community knows and cares about the child. Magnolia, who is battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, was actually diagnosed at the KDMC Pediatric & Adolescent Clinic.

Shann said children sponsored by Make-A-Wish are not necessarily terminal. They are just children who face a life-threatening disease.

“It [Make-A-Wish] gives them a moment of excitement when it’s been a rough road for them,” she said.

She said that the wishes are a break for both the children and the parents from the stress in their lives.

This is the third year KDMC has had a team, but it’s the first year to sponsor an individual child. Shann hopes to continue that tradition and sponsor children as needed in the area.

Make-A-Wish Mississippi is also holding a Walk for Wishes at the Exchange Club Park on Sept. 19. The 5K walk begins at 5 p.m. and the amusement rides are open from 6 to 9 p.m. Armbands are $10 for 6-year-olds and up and $5 for 5-year-olds and under.

Shann said last year, Lincoln County raised more than $30,000 for Make-A-Wish. She said if KDMC raises any money over the cost of Jones’s trip it will be donated to the general Make-A-Wish fund. All money raised stays in the state. Shann estimated that the average wish costs between $5,000 and $8,000.
