MONTICELLO – Lawrence County mauls the Seminary Bulldogs 49-7 in high school football action Friday night, at Lawrence County High School. The Cougars got four touchdowns from junior running back Quitten Brown as they rolled to a 35-0 halftime lead, then coasted home for the victory.
With the win, Jaymie Palmer’s Cougars improved to 5-1 on the season, as they prepare for their division opener next Friday, against North Pike. Seminary, under coach Brian Rials, fell to 3-3.
“We had a pretty good night,” said Palmer, whose Cougars are on a four-game winning streak. “We put the ball on the ground too much. Otherwise, I thought it was a decent effort in all three phases-offense, defense and special teams.”
Brown now has an incredible 18 touchdowns in six games. On Friday, he scored on runs of 4, 8, and 7 yards, and hauled in a 71-yard scoring pass. He rushed for 97 yards on 11 carries. Quarterback Charl’Tez Nunnery completed eight of 12 passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 37 yards and a score.
Lawrence County dominated, outgaining Seminary 446-96 in total offense. Fourteen of Seminary’s 41 plays resulted in lost yardage, and four of them resulted in turnovers.
Nunnery fumbled the football away on the first play from scrimmage. That was the last thing that went wrong for the Cougars. Six plays later, LCHS linebacker Azar Myles recovered a Seminary fumble. Myles then hauled in a Nunnery pass for 25 yards, converting on a third-and-21 situation. Brown eventually scored on a 4-yard run. Lawrence County’s Joshua Stephens converted seven straight extra point attempts.
On the ensuing kickoff, Seminary’s Felix McCullum fumbled along his own goal line. Lawrence County’s Marcus Kees pounced on the football, and it was suddenly 14-0.
Two minutes into the second quarter, Cougar Marcus Atterberry caught an 8-yard touchdown pass. His 27-yard reception on fourth-and-21, moments earlier, helped to set it up.
After a Blake Williams fumble recovery at the Seminary 13-yard line, Brown scored on an 8-yard run, making it a 28-0 game with just over 8 minutes left in the first half. The LCHS defense then forced a Seminary punt, setting up the 71-yard Nunnery-to-Brown connection. It was 35-0 at halftime.
The Lawrence County defense produced another turnover early in the third quarter, a Josh Knight fumble recovery. Four plays later, Brown scored on a 7-yard run. A 30-yard pass reception by A.J. McLaurin set it up. McLaurin had three catches for 61 yards.
Seminary’s lone tally came with 4:46 left in the third quarter, on a Javaris Crosby 9-yard run. Crosby led the Bulldog offense with 41 yards on six carries. Lawrence County got that touchdown right back. Nunnery scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak, after sophomore Gage Daley raced for 47 yards.
Unofficially, LCHS linebackers KeMarcus Brown and T-Tez were both in double figures in tackles. Seminary picked up just 96 yards and seven first downs in the game.
