Brookhaven splits with Wesson

The Brookhaven Panthers and the Wesson Lady Cobras captured wins in Saturday’s high school basketball action at Sinclair Gymnasium.

In the girls contest, the Lady Cobras managed to squeeze out a narrow 38-37 victory over the Lady Panthers.

In boys action, The unbeaten Panthers hand the Cobras their first loss of the season with a 73-51 victory.

Wesson will return to action Monday as they travel to Monticello to participate in Lawrence County’s Thanksgiving holiday tournament. Game time and opponent has not been released at press time.

The Brookhaven Panthers will resume action Saturday as they visit Harrison Central to take on the Red Rebels in a boys’ only contest. Tip off has not been set.

Lady Cobras 38, Lady Panthers 37

The Wesson Lady Cobras and the Brookhaven Lady Panthers entered into Saturday contest hungry for their first win of the season as both teams fought in a low scoring first quarter of action with Wesson leading 6-5.

In the second period, the Lady Cobras managed to put together a 12-9 run to extend their lead to 18-14 at halftime.

In the second half, Wesson came out and outscored the Lady Panthers 12-4 to push their lead out to 29-18.

In the final period of action, the Lady Panthers rallied back with a 18-9 run in the final minutes to fall short clinching the first win as the Lady Cobras escaped with a 38-37 win.

Jashia Smith directed the Lady Cobras’ offense with 16 points. Carnesha Green netted six points. Aurianna Vaughn provided five points. Tasha Glasper and Alaysha Vaughn scored four points each. Alaysha Mims had three points.

Asia Byrd and Taylor Carter were the top scorers for the Lady Panthers with eight points each. Byrd was the leader on the boards with nine rebounds. Cheyenne Motley chipped in with six points and grabbed five rebounds. Jada Henderson scored five points. Miyah Miller and Mya Washington had four points each. Both Henderson and Washington had four boards each. Arnancy Arnold finished with two points.

Brookhaven 73, Wesson 51 

In the battle between two undefeated teams, the Panthers came out strong in the first half to claim a 46-25 lead by halftime.

In the second half, Brookhaven managed to outscore Wesson 27-26 in the final two quarters of action to clinch the win.

The Panthers had five players to score in double figure in their home opener as Lazorian McNulty lead the charge with 16 points. Darrian Wilson chipped in 14 points. Shon Blackwell and Damarius Brook netted 12 points each. Garrick Smith had 11 points. Darius Bryant score four points and Marte Jones added two points.

Anthony Jones powered the Cobras attack with a game-high 33-point effort. Eric Rhymes finished with six points. Kendrick Brown and Shemar Dickerson contributed four points each. Randy Hooker and Jermaine James had two points apiece.
