BA secures wins in tournament

The Brookhaven Academy Cougars and Lady Cougars were victorious in Day 2 of their Holiday Tournament at John R. Gray Gymnasium.

In the girls’ contest, the Lady Cougars (12-6) thumped the Tri-County Academy Lady Rebels 41-26.

In the boys’ game, the Cougars (8-7) rallied in fourth quarter to edge the Amite School Center Rebels 46-41.

Tournament action continues today as the Parklane Lady Pioneers battle Trinity at 3 p.m. The ACCS boys face ASC at 4:30. The Lady Cougars entertain Riverfield at 6 and the Cougars take on Riverfield at 7:30 p.m.

Lady Cougars 41, Lady Rebels 26

The Lady Cougars hammered the Lady Rebels early to claim a 14-4 lead. In the second quarter, BA continued its strong attack to take a 22-11 lead into halftime.

In the second half, BA outscored Tri-County 19-15 in the final two frames to collect the win.

“The girls came out and played a lot better tonight,” said BA coach Josh Watts. “Overall, I was very please with their efforts and glad to get the win.”

Kailyn Jordan powered the Lady Cougars’ offense with 16 points and five rebounds. Anna-Michael Smith contributed eight points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists. Edie Riley netted six points. Bailey Stewart scored three points. Cameron Watson, Anna Grace Covington, Sissy Byrd and Shelby Flumm had two points each.

Leta McCullough was the top scorer for the Lady Rebels with 10 points. Mollie Scale had six points and Rebecca Crewe added five points.

BA 46, ASC 41 

BA managed to secure a 14-10 lead in the first and put together a 13-8 run to carry a 27-18 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Rebels rallied back and outscored BA 14-4 to claim a brief 32-31 lead over the Cougars.

In the final period, BA answered ASC’s challenge with a 15-9 run to edge the Rebels.

“The boys came out flat and did not play well at all,” said Watts. “We were very fortunate to get the win tonight.”

Ethan Nations had a double-double performance to lead the Cougars with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Tate Felder chipped in nine points and three rebounds. Dawson Flowers netted seven points and had five rebounds. Luke Jackson, Dylan Winborne and Ross Felder scored five points each. Ross Felder also grabbed five rebounds. Austin Smith had four points and seven assists.

Dylan Fry was the offensive leader for the Rebels with 12 points. Ashton Planche contributed nine points. Mason Conerly scored six points.

(Girls) Trinity 38, Canton 31 

D’Asia Mitchell paced Trinity’s offense with 16 points. Tali Beard scored 10 points.

Betsy Pace was the top scorer for Canton with 11 points. Hayden Anderson had 10 points.

 (Girls) ACCS 57, Riverfield 25

Bailey Boyd led the Lady Rebels with 15 points. Anna McDaniel netted nine points.

Taylor Hixon powered the Riverfield girls with 10 points. Marissa Crockett scored seven points.

(Boys) Riverfield 70, Tri-County 36

John Kevin Greer pumped in a game-high 23 points to lead Riverfield. Noah Wroten chipped in 18 points and Joseph Morris provided 16 points.

J.J. White directed Tri-County’s offense with 17 points. Jake Jones had eight points.
