PEARL – The Wesson Cobras and the Lady Cobras dropped two tough losses in Tuesday night tournament action at Pearl.

In girls’ action, the Germantown Lady Mavericks put away the Lady Cobras in the second half to claim a 46-23 victory.

In the boys’ contest, the Southeast Lauderdale Tigers outscored the Cobras 41-22 in the second half to win 68-48.

Wesson will resume action Tuesday as it hosts the Loyd Star Hornets for four games. Junior high action begins at 4 and 5 p.m. The varsity girls will tip off at 6 p.m., followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m.

Lady Mavericks 46, Lady Cobras 23

Germantown carried a slim 15-14 lead into halftime and dominated Wesson 31-9 in the final two quarters.

“We played well early in the game but as the contest progressed we got careless and Germantown took advantage,” said Wesson coach Rusty Newman. “We were only down one point at halftime, but Germantown came out with a lot of intensity in the second half and we shut down. We’ve got to learn how to play all four quarters because district play is right around the corner.”

Tashay Glasper and Alaysha Vaughn were the top scorers for the Lady Cobras with seven points each. Jashia Smith contributed six points. Aurianna Vaughn had three points.

Tiara Scott directed the Lady Mavericks with 12 points. Essence Lambert scored nine points and Aneisha Evans had eight points.

SE Lauderdale 68, Wesson 48 

SE Lauderdale led 27-26 at halftime, and the Tigers outscored the Cobras 41-22 in the final two periods to claim the win.

“Both teams battled in a back-and-forth contest in the first half as we trailed Southeast Lauderdale by only one point at halftime,” said Newman. “Defensively, we played poorly and Southeast Lauderdale did a great job of making us pay by moving the ball around to get some good shots. We managed to get some good looks in the fourth quarter but just could not convert. Southeast Lauderdale is very similar to the teams we play in our district so I believe this game will help us prepare for district play. We will learn from this loss and move on.”

Anthony Jones was the scoring leader for the Cobras with 23 points and eight rebounds. Kendrick Brown contributed 13 points and had seven rebounds. Eric Rhymes provided nine points and grabbed six rebounds. Shemar Dickerson scored two points and Will Hulon had one point.
