Wesson woman killed in I-55 wreck

A two-car accident on I-55 at exit 42 in Brookhaven Saturday morning left one teenager dead and two others injured.

Dyangela Furnace, 19, of Wesson, was pronounced dead at the scene when Deputy Coroner Robert Tyler arrived at 11:35 a.m. She was the passenger in the backseat on the driver’s side of a passenger car driven by Jessie Gilmore, 40, of Wesson, according to Mississippi Highway Patrol Spokesperson Brandon Fortenberry. Also in the car was Sonia Evans, 44, of Brookhaven. Both Evans and Gilmore sustained moderate injuries.

The accident happened earlier, at 9:50 a.m. The Chevrolet passenger car was traveling southbound on I-55 in the right lane and proceeded to the ramp at exit 42. The second vehicle, a Chevrolet Silverado truck driven by Robert Parkin, 23, of Madison, came into contact with the rear of the first vehicle. He sustained no injuries.

According to the MHP report, the passenger car came to rest off of the right side of the interstate down an embankment facing south. The second vehicle came to rest on the shoulder of the interstate facing south.

The accident is still under investigation, Fortenberry said.
