Loyd Star Lady Hornets clobber Bassfield

The Loyd Star Lady Hornets and the Bassfield Yellowjackets secured division wins in Region 7-2A basketball action at Loyd Star Gymnasium Tuesday night.
In the girls’ contest, the Lady Hornets clobbered the Bassfield Lady Yellowjackets 70-40.
In boys’ action, Bassfield knocked off the Hornets in overtime 69-62.
Loyd Star will be in action today as the Hornets and Lady Hornets travel to Salem to battle the Salem Wildcats in a non-division contest. The varsity girls will tip off at 6 p.m., followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m.
Lady Hornets 70, Lady Yellowjackets 40
The Lady Hornets (9-1, 2-0) quickly took care of business Tuesday night as they overpowered Bassfield in the first half to claim a 36-21 halftime advantage.
In the second half, Loyd Star dominated the Lady Yellowjackets with a 34-21 run in the final two quarters to secure the win.
“The girls came out and played really well,” said Loyd Star coach Gene “Moochie” Britt. “Overall, I was very pleased with the girls’ effort and glad to get the win in region action.”
Makenzie Smith powered the Lady Hornets with 21 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Jordan Shelby chipped in 11 points, two steals and was the leader on the boards with nine rebounds. Faith Bergeron and Hannah Dickerson provided seven points each. Katie West netted four points. Lydia Britt scored three points and had four rebounds. Caylee Yarborough, Megan Poole and Marley Poole finished with two points each.
Derria White was the top scorer for the Lady Yellowjackets with 13 points. Azaria Magee scored 12 points and Jaquala Green had seven points.
Bassfield 69, Loyd Star 62
Bassfield put together an 11-4 run in overtime, after watching its lead over Loyd Star vanish in the second half.
Bassfield carried a 31-23 lead into halftime, but Loyd Star (4-6, 0-2) stormed back with a 35-27 run in the final two quarters to tie the game at 58-58 at the end of regulation.
“The guys played hard,” said Britt. “We had our chance to win, but we made some crucial mistakes at the end that hurt us. We have got to learn to finish games when we are ahead at the end of the game.”
Levi Redd was the offensive leader for the Hornets with 27 points, nine rebounds and two steals. Javion Beard chipped in 16 points, seven rebounds, three steals and had four blocked shots. Cade Hodges netted 15 points and had two assists. Avery Leggett scored four and had two assists.
Cartavis Adams directed the Yellowjackets with 25 points. Caleb McLaurin scored 14 points and Gerobe Peters had 13 points.
In junior varsity boys’ action, Bassfield beat Loyd Star 26-19. Dane Smith paced with Hornets with nine points. Zabian Price and Brent Cade provided three points each. Dawson Zumbro and Adicuz Harris had two points each.
