Loyd Star sweeps Enterprise in region action

Loyd Star was victorious over Enterprise in Region 7-2A action at Enterprise Gymnasium Friday night.

In the girls’ contest, the Lady Hornets knocked off the Lady Jackets to claim a 55-47 victory.

In boys’ action, the Hornets captured their first region win of the season with a 61-53 victory over Enterprise.

Loyd Star will return to action Tuesday as the Hornets and Lady Hornets host the Prentiss Bulldogs for a big division test. Junior varsity action begins at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity games at 6 and 7:30 p.m.

Enterprise will also be in action Tuesday as it visits West Lincoln to play the Bears in a region matchup. Junior varsity action begins at 4 and 5 p.m., followed by the varsity games at 6 and 7:30 p.m.

Lady Hornets 55, Lady Jackets 47

Loyd Star carried a 31-21 lead into halftime, and the Lady Hornets continued to overpower the Lady Jackets to extend their lead to 41-33 after three quarters.

In the final quarter, the Lady Jackets cut into the Lady Hornets’ lead, but it wasn’t enough for the win.

Courtney Greer and Carlee Nations directed the Lady Jackets with 11 points each. Michelle Herrington netted 10 points. Allisa Barlow scored nine points and was the leader on the boards with four rebounds. Monisha Pendleton and Janna Nations provided two points each. Hayley Nations and Eden Ward finished with one point apiece.

“The girls’ effort was great, but we still have got to make free throws,” said Enterprise coach Jill Nations.

Mackenzie Smith powered the Lady Hornets with 20 points and eight rebounds. Faith Berguron netted 15 points and had three assists. Jordan Shelby scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Hannah Dickerson netted seven points, eight rebounds and had three blocked shots. Toni Banks and Lydia Britt finished with three points each.

“This was a physical game and I’m glad to get the district win,” said Loyd Star coach Gene “Moochie” Britt. “Overall, I was pleased with the girls’ effort. We made some key shots at the end when we needed them.”

Loyd Star 61, Enterprise 53

Loyd Star led 17-12 at the end of the first and carried a 30-26 lead into halftime.

Loyd Star outscored Enterprise 31-27 in the final two quarters to capture its first division win of the season.

Levi Red powered Loyd Star with 20 points, 10 rebounds and two assists. Cade Hodges netted 14 points, four rebounds and five assists. Avery Leggett pumped in 10 points and had four rebounds. Greg Hooks scored six points, four rebounds and two assists. Patrick Price netted six points and had eight rebounds. Javion Beard finished with five points, six rebounds and three assists. Zabian Price had nine rebounds. Dane Smith ended up with four rebounds and two assists.

“We got into heavy foul trouble early, but our bench came in and did a good job,” said Britt. “Our boys fought hard through four quarters of action to get the win.”

Dwayne Pendleton paced the Jackets with 28 points. Jontavious Smith netted 15 points. Darren Richardson scored eight points. Zack Hodges finished with two points.

“Proud of the kids, they played hard,” said Enterprise coach John Knight. “We need to make our shots and stop giving up big runs.”

In junior varsity action, Loyd Star swept Enterprise in two games.

In girls’ action, the Lady Hornets edged the Lady Jackets 37-34.

In the boys’ contest, Loyd Star prevailed over Enterprise 27-14.
